Greetings! I am Jon Davidson, mathematics professor at Southern State Community College since 1991.
I am 47 years old, and was married for 20 years but is recently divorced, which makes me Hillsboro's most eligible bachelor. . . . Or, at least, an eligible bachelor. . . . Well, I'm available if anyone would have me!
I have two lovely daughters, Heather (20 yrs. old) and Heidi (14 yrs. old). Born in Dodge City, Kansas, I grew up in Clearwater, Florida, and have at times lived in Tallahassee; Daytona Beach; Baton Rouge, La.; Whittier, Calif.; and Loudon, Tenn. We have lived in Hillsboro, Ohio for over 11 years.
Hillsboro is a rural town of around 6,000 residents about fifty miles east of Cincinnati, and has two famous contributions to history. Hillsboro is where the Womens' Temperance Movement began in 1872. Ironically, it's also where country singer Johnny Paycheck shot a drunk in a bar a few years back. Hillsboro also has the oldest courthouse in Ohio still in use (built 1832), the first pharmacy west of the Appalachians (1807), was the home of the company that made most of the bells for Coast Guard ships during WWII, and was the population center of the United States in the year 1870. The area was initially settled by Revolutionary War veterans.
I earned an A.A. from St. Petersburg Community College (1975), a B.S. in Applied Mathematics from Florida State University (1978), and an M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Southern California (1986). I taught part-time at St. Petersburg Junior College in 1987, full-time at Roane State Community College in Harriman, Tenn., 1988-1991, and full-time at Southern State since 1991. Before all that I worked as a manager for seven years in the real world for H. J. Wilson Co., Inc., which was sold to Service Merchandise in 1985. I worked in store management, and also worked as Manager of Merchandise Statistics in the home office in Baton Rouge, La.
My other interests include music and chess. I play alto sax in the SSCC Jazz Ensemble and the SSCC Community Band. I also play clarinet and piano. I have also written some music, including a scherzo for piano, variations for a quintet, an arrangement of the Star Spangled Banner used by our community band, a band piece called Elegy for the Victims of Terrorism, and a duet for clarinet and horn.
In chess I am a life member of the USCF, with a rating just a hair under the expert category. At one time or another I was champion of, or won championships in, Dunedin, Clearwater, Tallahassee, Daytona Beach and Pinellas County, all in Florida, and also Baton Rouge, La.
